macOS Catalina brought big changes to the Mac, including the ability to run iPad apps natively, opening the platform up to a much larger number of developers than ever before. Catalina shipped with multiple variants of its default wallpaper, and the ability to shift between them as time progresses throughout the day:
This version of macOS builds on Big Sur, bringing Shortcuts and a range of features that are also part of iOS and iPadOS 15. As of the first beta, Monterey does not include any new nature wallpapers as previous releases has.
Do you remember the lovely space-themed galaxy and nebula wallpapers from Mac OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, and Leopard? We covered them when they were released roughly a decade(!) ago, but those images are all now considered lower resolution thanks to todays high-res displays.
Click on any thumbnail below to launch into the new window to load the full sized version . Note the full resolution images are hosted by third parties and thus they may take a moment or two to download their complete size, particularly the default sunset image that is shown in the myriad of OS X 10.10 screen shots as it is quite large, displaying at a full whopper 5148 x 2048 pixel resolution. Enjoy!
Thanks to a MacRumors forum thread for posting the various links to the images, the latter image with the superimposed (X) logo looks to be a user creation and not an official wallpaper or piece of artwork from Apple, but it still looks quite nice.
Since the introduction of macOS Mojave, Mac desktop backgrounds have gotten a bit more lively and dynamic, adapting to the exact hour of the day. At the same time, Apple moved away from nature wallpapers, leaving us with abstract graphics, which might feel a bit bland.

You might be wondering how to change screen saver to something custom. First, you need to find a suitable screen saver and download it. The screen saver should have a .saver file extension. Then, to install it, either double-click on the file or move the file to your Library > Screen Savers folder. Now you should see the new screensaver in the Desktop & Screen Saver list.
Version 3.2.0 now offers support for macOS Ventura and its new System Settings. Adventurous users may also want to try the beta version of Aerial Companion that includes a redesigned user interface and needed fixes for Ventura. It can be downloaded here.
A big improvement is adding controls to what used to be fairly hidden under an experimental menu : the ability to run Aerial as your Wallpaper! And now, you can control it from Companion. On top of being able to Stop and Restart the wallpaper, you can also pause it, skip a video, or even skip and hide the video, right from the UI.
Mac OS X 10.11 and iOS 9 won't be officially released until later this year, but that doesn't mean you can't get a taste of it today. And the easiest way to do that is to download the new El Capitan and iOS 9 wallpapers.
To apply one of the wallpapers below, just click/tap on the image link, save it to your device, then apply it like you normally would. Again, make sure you select the link, not the examples displayed below, because the links provide full-resolution images. These will work for most systems, including iOS, Mac OS X, Windows, Android, and Linux.
The official iOS 9 wave wallpaper extracted from the beta release is in its full 2,706 x 2,706 resolution, and can be use as a background for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. You could also use it on your Mac, but make sure to choose either "Center" or "Fill Screen" on the Desktop settings. You could also use "Stretch to Fill Screen" if you don't mind the stretched look.
From apps that provide them to making your own, we've outlined several ways to get yourself an animated wallpaper desktop below, so you always have something interesting to look at when you're taking a break on your Mac.
You can also customize a dynamic desktop by clicking on the Pictures folder under the Desktop heading, and once it's selected, check the Change picture box. This will have your desktop cycle through all of the images in that folder as your MacBook Pro's live wallpaper.
You can set the time dropdown menu to whatever you want, from a super active live wallpaper background (Every 5 seconds) to one that shifts from image to image slowly (Every 30 minutes).
You can start with our list of the best dynamic Mac wallpaper sites. Then check out options like Satellite Eyes, which makes your wallpaper a satellite image of your current location with a variety of map effects.
Entire apps are dedicated to giving you galleries of animated and dynamic wallpapers to adorn your Mac desktop with. Many of them, like iWallpaper, allow you to simply click on a Live Wallpaper option and hit a Set as wallpaper button, so you don't even need to open System Preferences on your Mac.
To do this, you can upload Live Photos you've taken into dynamic wallpaper sites and apps, like Dynamic Wallpaper Club and Dynaper. Then have the Live Photos become short videos that play on your desktop.
Many live wallpapers you can put on Macs are Quartz animations, and you probably already have some Quartz animations on your machine: the default screensavers. These can be made into animated wallpapers pretty quickly.

I had this problem also and decided to find the photos and make my own screen saver. go to this site -mac-os.html and individually download each of the flower photos or whatever ones you liked from Catalina. Create a new folder then place all the photos in the new folder. name the folder Catalina Flowers then open up System Preferences on your computer then Desktop & Screen Saver. Go to Ken Burns then click where it says Source and scroll down to choose folder. find your folder then push choose.
You'll find any available built-in wallpapers under System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver, and then in the Apple > Desktop Pictures folder. These options do vary with different macOS versions, but if you don't see one that you're looking for, keep in mind you can use most images you find online as custom wallpaper: Customize the desktop picture on your Mac
Hi, thank you. I know perfectly how to switch wallpapers. The previous wallpapers (not downloaded by my, but already present in Catalina) are wiped out. Would be cool if there was a webpage with all the wallpapers made available by apple during updates.
Once you have downloaded the images from the link above on your Mac you can AirDrop them to your iPhone, copy them to an iCloud folder, iMessage them to yourself, or just view them here (via the Imgur app), and download the one you like onto your iPhone.
Apple has included a different wallpaper with almost every release of Mac OS X, which is now renamed as macOS. Starting from macOS 10.0 Cheetah that was released way back in 2001 all the way to the very recent macOS 10.14 Mojave, almost each of these operating system versions featured a unique desktop wallpaper that became iconic, as it was featured on all Apple marketing material and even on Mac boxes.
If you liked any particular wallpaper from all the macOS releases from the past 17 years, then you will be pleased to know that you can download them in 5K resolution below. Thanks to their high resolution you can use them on any device from the 5K iMac to any MacBook Pro. The classic Mac wallpapers have been upscaled to 5K resolution so they will fit great on your high resolution modern computer. These images come from 512Pixels, so a huge thanks to them for making them available at one place.
